One Technology. Many Applications.
Your brain uses electricity every second of every day.
Every movement you make begins with an electrical signal. Your brain sends tiny electrical impulses through your nerves, telling your muscles when to contract, how much force to produce, and when to relax again. Without these signals, movement simply wouldn’t happen.
Electrical Muscle Stimulation, or EMS, uses carefully controlled electrical impulses to complement this natural communication system. By stimulating muscles through the skin, EMS can support exercise, rehabilitation, recovery, pelvic floor health, and body contouring, depending on how the technology is applied.
One of the reasons EMS first attracted attention was its potential use in spaceflight. Researchers studying microgravity explored whether electrical muscle stimulation could help astronauts maintain muscle activation during long-duration missions, where the absence of gravity leads to rapid muscle loss. Astronauts still rely primarily on exercise to stay strong in space, but EMS continues to be studied as a valuable complement to training and rehabilitation, both up there and here on Earth.
At AEGLE, we don’t think of EMS as a single treatment. We think of it as a versatile tool that adapts to different goals throughout your wellness journey.
The Science
Electrical stimulation has been used in medicine, physical therapy, rehabilitation, and sports performance for decades. When gentle electrical impulses reach a muscle, they encourage it to contract, and the intensity, frequency, and pattern of those impulses determine how the muscle responds. Researchers continue to study the many ways electrical stimulation may improve muscle activation, strength, rehabilitation, circulation, pain management, and functional recovery.
Importantly, EMS isn’t a replacement for exercise. It’s another way to challenge muscles, particularly when traditional exercise is limited by pain, injury, time constraints, or specific rehabilitation goals. Like everything we offer, the greatest benefits show up when EMS is folded into a fuller program that includes intelligent exercise, recovery, nutrition, and personalized coaching.
The AEGLE Difference
At AEGLE, we use EMS in several different ways, because different goals call for different approaches.
EMS Performance Training
Our EMS training suits combine voluntary exercise with electrical muscle stimulation, letting members perform functional movements while receiving carefully controlled stimulation to multiple muscle groups at once. This creates a uniquely efficient training session that may enhance muscle activation while reducing stress on the joints. Many members find EMS particularly valuable during rehabilitation, when rebuilding strength after an injury calls for a more gradual approach.
Pelvic Floor EMS
Pelvic floor muscles play an essential role in bladder control, core stability, posture, and sexual health. Our pelvic floor EMS chair stimulates these muscles while members remain fully clothed, keeping treatment comfortable, private, and non-invasive. It may benefit women after pregnancy, men following prostate surgery, individuals experiencing urinary incontinence, and anyone looking to improve pelvic floor function.
EMS Body Contouring
Some of our aesthetic treatments combine electrical muscle stimulation with radiofrequency energy to support muscle toning while promoting collagen remodeling and skin tightening. These treatments are designed to complement, not replace, a healthy lifestyle built on intelligent exercise and nutrition.
Although these applications look very different from one another, they all share the same underlying philosophy: using technology thoughtfully to help your body function at its best.
What Does the Research Say?
Electrical muscle stimulation has been studied extensively in rehabilitation medicine, physical therapy, sports performance, pelvic health, and aesthetics. Research supports its use in maintaining or improving muscle activation in selected situations, assisting rehabilitation after injury or surgery, and treating certain pelvic floor disorders. Additional studies continue to explore its role in athletic performance, recovery, and body contouring. As with every technology at AEGLE, we follow the science as it evolves and personalize treatment based on your individual goals and medical history.
Is It Right for You?
Electrical muscle stimulation might be beneficial if you’re looking to build strength alongside traditional exercise, recover after an injury, improve muscle activation, support athletic performance, improve pelvic floor strength and bladder control, complement a body contouring program, or simply explore another evidence-informed approach to wellness and recovery.
Your coach or medical provider can help figure out which type of EMS, if any, makes sense for your goals.
Important Considerations
Electrical muscle stimulation is safe for many healthy adults, but it isn’t appropriate for everyone. Anyone with implanted electrical devices such as pacemakers or neurostimulators, certain cardiac conditions, active epilepsy, pregnancy for some applications, or other medical concerns should speak with our medical team before participating.
Each EMS application has its own specific indications and contraindications, and our team will help determine the safest and most effective approach for your individual situation.
Why We Offer It
We don’t choose technologies at AEGLE because they’re impressive. We choose them because they solve problems. Sometimes the goal is helping someone return from an injury. Sometimes it’s improving athletic performance, strengthening the pelvic floor after childbirth, or helping someone feel more confident in their own skin. The technology stays the same. The application is what gets personalized, because the best treatment was never determined by the machine. It’s determined by the person.
No single therapy creates lasting health on its own. Real wellness comes from combining evidence-based medicine, intelligent exercise, thoughtful recovery, proper nutrition, restorative sleep, meaningful education, and a supportive community into something personal, something that helps you feel, function, and perform at your best.
